MORE than 150 people are expected to attend a National Tree Day planting session in Altona North this Sunday.
Friends of Lower Kororoit Creek will help volunteers plant 1500 indigenous trees and shrubs along the banks under the Barnes Road Bridge.
Friends president Geoff Mitchelmore said the day was the biggest event on the group's calendar.
"It's more than a tree-planting day - it's a celebration of the Kororoit Creek waterway and brings together the community, our sponsors and supporters and, in particular, Toyota personnel to a wonderful day."
Personnel from Toll Group and Altona Memorial Park will also take part. Mr Mitchelmore said work would start soon on a $200,000 nature reserve and two-kilometre looped walking trail between Dohertys and Barnes roads on the west side of Kororoit Creek.
The project is sponsored by Vision for Werribee Plains, Toyota, Toll Group, Altona Memorial Park, Millers Inn, Hobsons Bay City Council and Melbourne Water. It is scheduled to be completed by the end of next year.
The mass planting will be from
10am-1pm and be followed by a free barbecue, courtesy of the Altona Lions, with entertainment from Edvardo the clown.
