HOBSONS Bay Council has sent a delegation to its indigenous sister city of Yarrabah in far north Queensland.
Yarrabah, seven kilometres from Cairns, has a population of about 4000.
Hobsons Bay chief executive Bill Jaboor, mayor Bill Tehan and two council officers arrived in Yarrabah on Monday and are due to return today.
Cr Tehan said the visit aimed to strengthen ties between the two communities.
"Yarrabah is a coastal community like Hobsons Bay, but with our community consisting of 86,000 residents, there is plenty that can be learnt from each other," Cr Tehan said.
"We will discuss the issue of coastal planning, environmental initiatives and strategic planning to ensure the needs of our respective communities are met.
"We also plan on offering business mentoring and devising tourism strategies that can be shared between the two communities. The visit will give us an opportunity to add value to each council's cultural programs and further cement our friendship alliance, which officially began in 2006 when the relationship was formalised."
A Yarrabah delegation visited Hobsons Bay in March to discuss education, art and culture, infrastructure, the environment, business and reconciliation.
Cr Tehan hoped Hobsons Bay's council officers could offer expert advice to the Yarrabah community.
