MARIBYRNONG Council is not living up to community expectations, its annual community survey has revealed.
Satisfaction with the council's overall performance declined last year, with survey respondents rating 6.34 out of 10, down from 6.58 the year before.
Mayor Sel Sanli said Metropolis Research, which conducted the survey, had advised it was a general "dampening down" because of the recession and other councils were having similar results.
"They say it is a drop because of the financial crisis. We have to be realistic as well. I don't think anything will be 10 out 10; we don't live in a perfect world," Cr Sanli said.
The survey also found that:
■Residents in Kingsville and Footscray were more satisfied, while Footscray West and Yarraville were less so compared to the municipal average.
■Garbage, recycling and litter collection were the three most important services, although respondents were pleased with the council's management.
■Respondents were least impressed with the council's management of public toilets, Footscray CBD, housing developments, parking enforcement and footpath repairs.
■About one-third believed domestic violence was common in the community.
Cr Sanli said the results would be used in forming council policy and initiatives.
"A lot of people aren't engaged and that is a communication barrier."
Since 2004, Metropolis Research has surveyed the community to measure satisfaction with Maribyrnong Council. From July to September last year, face-to-face interviews were conducted at 1200 houses across the municipality.
