Council hears parking pain message

01 Sep, 2010 01:00 AM

A COMMUNITY backlash to the Footscray CBD parking strategy has resulted in a parking re-think by Maribyrnong Council.

The council will provide an education program to "better educate the community about the differences between no-parking and no-stopping zones" following much confusion surrounding the so-called "kiss and drop spaces".

"We have listened to traders' and shoppers' concerns about the availability of short-term parking and have installed additional parking zones to help improve access and retail turnover in central Footscray," mayor Sel Sanli said. The no-parking zones will allow free short-term parking for up to two minutes. Under the road rules, drivers must stay within three metres of the vehicle when stopped in a no-parking zone.

The seven new short-term parking spaces are located along Albert, Byron, Hopkins, Leeds and Paisley streets in central Footscray. "We hope this campaign will improve pedestrian safety and encourage our community to utilise all the parking options available in central Footscray," Cr Sanli said.
