HOBSONS Bay lost the inaugural Buloke-Hobsons Bay bowls challenge cup match, played at Donald last week, but there were no hard feelings.
Twenty-four bowlers from Altona, Altona North and Newport represented the city in a two-day tournament initiated by Hobsons Bay Mayor Peter Hemphill.
Buloke emerged victorious, 19-11.
"It's all about furthering relations between both communities," Cr Hemphill said.
"On that score, it was a resounding success and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
"There was great camaraderie; everyone had a ball. On the first day the score was 10-8, so it was quite close.
"I don't know whether the Buloke people spiked our drinks or if they had the home-ground advantage, but they romped home on the second day."
The tournament was sponsored by the Altona, Laverton and Point Cook Bendigo Community Bank.
Next year's return bout is expected to be held around March/April in Hobsons Bay.
