Oakeshott holds Australia hostage with self-indulgent theatrics

Oakeshott holds Australia hostage with self-indulgent theatrics

Everyone is entitled to their 15 minutes of fame.

But the multitudes waiting to find out which side of politics would form Australia's next government have just been subjected to some particularly cruel and unusual punishment at the hands of the independent MP Rob Oakeshott.

It was hardly an edifying performance for an MP who has spent the last two weeks espousing transparency, short answers in parliamentary Question Time and putting the national interest first.

Mr Oakeshott and his fellow independent MP Tony Windsor started their press conference just after 3pm in Parliament's main committee room.

Public interest was intense following Bob Katter's decision earlier in the day to back the Coalition.

Katter's move meant there were two possible outcomes depending on how both Mr Oakeshott and Mr Windsor jumped.

Labor would form government if both backed Julia Gillard; but if they split two ways, then it would be deadlocked at 75 votes for a Labor minority government and 75 for a Coalition minority government.

The contrast between how the two independents presented themselves was stark.

Mr Windsor made a couple of succinct opening remarks, declared that he would support Labor and made some brief comments about the reasons for his decision.

Then he handed over to Mr Oakeshott who decided to play the moment for all it was worth, by holding back his actual decision and instead running through all of the reasons, factors and issues which had preyed on his mind.

It was not until 26 minutes after the press conference had started that Mr Oakeshott finally shared with the public his decision on the final vote that would either give Australia a government or send it back to an election.

At one point he deliberately played up the suspense, saying that the numbers on the floor of the House could still go either 76-74 Ms Gillard's way or be deadlocked 75 votes apiece.

When he finally announced his decision, Julia Gillard and the entire Labor Party will have breathed a sigh of relief at finally falling over the line.

But the erratic performance earlier today of Queensland independent Bob Katter and the self-indulgent behaviour of Mr Oakeshott will sound a small warning bell for the incoming minority Labor government.

For despite the rhetoric of the independents about new political paradigms and a co-operative approach to policy-making, today's performances by Messrs Oakeshott and Katter suggest that on contentious pieces of legislation and policy issues, the government could be hostage to some unhelpful theatrics from two of the three rural indepedents.

Little wonder Gillard has moved to get the loquacious member for Lyne further inside the Labor tent by offering to appoint Mr Oakeshott to a frontbench position.

Yes,he made the most of the suspense of the moment although it was rather obvious where it was heading~When Katter aligned with the liberals out of a sense of personal loyalty to Rudd earlier today, it seemed clear me what the result would be well before Windsor gave his answer~Oakeshott is an eloquent and confident speaker, more able with words than Windsor~I think he felt as though the public deserved to know what had gone on during the past 17 days and wanted to clarify the situation for all to see and understand~Many of the points he raised were of strong significance for the evolution of politics and the growth of society for all who dwell within it~After his phone calls from 'the devil' it would have been a sign of his weakness and lack of integrity to align him self with lucifer's heavies would it not? We stand upon the threshold of cultural change,it is an exciting time to be alive~

"have just been subjected to some particularly cruel and unusual punishment at the hands of the independent MP Rob Oakeshott." What on earth are you talking about? That was a huge decision to make by the independents. I for one feel the outcome will be good for Australia. Remember, if the coalition had done it's job as opposition, Labour would not have been allowed to run up debt and make some big mistakes. If you disagree with me, that's fine, it is a free country. But please consider this, give the independents a go. What's done is done, now it's time to make the most of it.

Labour has been in Government for 2 minutes and has already spent $130 million! Where is it coming from! Rudd was like a spoilt fat kid in a lolly shop and it seems the rest of the party wlll do and say anything to retain power. Bloody stupid decision! The most critical care units in hospitals are already understaffed and underfunded.

I watched his sad performance on ABC 24 Hours, he reminded me of a salesman who has no confidence in his products and much to hide. But remember, he is the only "independent" to have been offered a cabinet position by the new Green Labor Coalition. Maybe next year he will have Green Labor on his electioneering material? They say that you don't need a long neck and feathers to look like a Goose.

What a self-indulgent performance by Rob Oakeshott. Hope you enjoy your time in the sun because I doubt you will be there for too long, unless, of course, the faceless men of the Labor Party bribe you into their tent. Nothing would surprise me! I'm disgusted with you!!!

Rob Oakeshott is nothing more than a show pony. he promised fisherman that he would never back the greens and now with a ministry dangling he took hook line and sinker. He electorate will sort out this fraud

Oakeshott will be sliced and diced next time. What a betrayal of the very people who voted him in. Seven pieces of silver have shown us the misery of this man. Off with him.

Mark, thankyou for an excellent commentary. Whilst I am a supporter of Labor I am no supporter of Oakshott. I am concerned after his recent performance that he will have a major influence on the direction of the country. It would be great if the Port News could reprint this in the paper to reach a wider audience and expose some of the criticisms about Oakshott as all we ever seem to get are puff piece press releases.

Back to the polls within six months...guaranteed. Too much fairy dust from your elected member of parliament. Good luck
